#SOTW // Check out Los Angeles native and KCRW DJ @anthonyvaladez’s instee store ~ insteegr.am/anthonyvaladez ~ Anthony Valadez purchased his first set of turntables with money he earned working a summer job at a public pool in Sylmar. Ever since, he has kept his eyes on the prize and focused on conquering the Southern California music scene. // Anthony joined the Marines, later pursuing a degree in Theater at Cal State Northridge. Music was always an escape and not just from typical teen troubles — two of Anthony’s brothers are incarcerated and he credits music with keeping him straight. // The Santa Monica resident (who loves the beach but can’t stand seafood, interestingly enough) draws his biggest inspiration from simple people watching. // “The ‘people’ element is why I live by the beach. There is definitely a special energy here,” said Anthony. “I’m influenced by the underdogs of society and single mothers, the people I see at bus stops and the folks I ride by on my bike. The people who make up Los Angeles inspire me.” // Anthony has been DJ’ing for over 15 years and listening to KCRW for even longer. He explored the dial for obscure beats before he was old enough to enter the clubs. // He has opened for a wide range of talented artists, including; Les Nubians, Ben Harper, Van Hunt, Doug E Fresh, Amel Larrieux, Bilal, Eric Roberson, Dengue Fever, Meshell N’degeocello, Nikka Costa, Sa Ra Creative Partners, and J Davey. He currently holds down four DJ residencies across Los Angeles, from Venice to Highland Park, each with a different vibe. He has also worked behind the scenes in marketing for Interscope/Geffen/A&M and A& R at Dreamworks Records/Urban. In the early stages of his project, he designed a numbered series of photo books featuring his iPhone street photography, in order to challenge people’s perception of photography, what it is, has become, and how they engage our physical environment to interact with it.. He hid them and people found them in both San Francisco and New York. With great response from his fans and press, he’s decided to take this all across the cities of the U.S.; and that’s where YOU come in.

Film will always be visually where it’s at. It’s always been the gold standard for photography. In a world filled with digital sensors, absorbing light, converting the light rays into electrical signals and having a computer chip construct the photo you just took; It’s nice to take a step back and shoot film. The Nikon S3 2000 is a classic revival. Nearly Identical to the 1958 Nikon S3 that was known for it’s simplicity.  It’s quiet, it’s lightweight, compact and perfect for street photography. The Nikon S3 is Nikon’s best rangefinder camera. Unlike most cameras today, the insides are all metal. It’s sturdy and made to last. However, this camera is not for the faint of heart. Especially when it comes to the price. It’s a modern classic and Nikon decided to only make a limited number of 8,000 units.  Be that as it may it’s always nice to have a little piece of classic history in your hands.
